Looking to getaway from the "rat-race", they would occasionally hop into the old dory and explore the Macal River. One day Dad drove the dory up the Macal River until the rapids were impassable by boat. There he tied the dory and hiked upstream alongside the river-bank. Within a couple miles, the terrain became extremely rugged and the jungle much denser. Pretty soon he came into a huge canyon with 800 foot cliffs, huge limestone boulders in the river, sandy beaches separated by upturned black slate, and waterfalls. This geographic area was known as Black Rock. It was absolutely gorgeous! Dad realized that this was probably the most incredible location in Belize! He vowed to return someday when he had the money and time to build a getaway to beat all getaways! One day, in 1987, Dad and I decided to go exploring on our motorbike. We packed a lunch and took off. Before we had decided on any particular course, we found ourselves at Negroman, a citrus orchard and cattle farm south of San Ignacio. We drove through the orchard and on till the road dead-ended. Since we were but a short hike through the jungle from Black Rock, we decided to go see it again.
