September
13th and 14th, 2003, will not be just another weekend on the Belize
River!
Under the moon-light of Saturday the 13th,
Belizeans will witness day-one of Belize's second annual Belize
Extreme Canoe Adventure Race 03.
Fully sponsored by "Belikin Beer, The
Beer of Belize", this will be Belize's second ever attempt to paddle
170 miles non-stop cross-country in a canoe. The race will start
in San Ignacio and finishing at the BelCan Bridge in Belize City
some 19 hours later.
Canoe teams, comprising up to 3 members,
will gather under the Hawkesworth Bridge at 2pm for check-in, registration,
equipment check, and orientation. All teams are required to be fully
sponsored and have all the items in BCAnoe's
list of "must-haves".
After registration all teams and their
canoes will move to the San Ignacio Town Hall for the start of the
Race. At 4pm, canoe teams will pick up their canoes and race on
foot passed the Police Station, across the Hawkesworth Bridge, turning
left down the road to the Macal river and enter the river upstream
of the yellow "Caution" tape. At that point, teams will hop into
their canoes and paddle non-stop for the next 19 to 24 hours.
Canoe Crazy fans, sponsors, and ground
crews will support their favorite teams as they paddle down the
Macal River, into the Belize River, past the Baking Pot Ferry, Iguana
Creek Bridge and into the moon-lit night passing Young Bank Ferry,
Banana Bank, More Tommorrow, Saint Pauls Bank, Willows Bank, and
Bermudian Landing.
As dawn breaks on the morning of the 14th,
canoes will be seen racing past Isabella Bank, Flowers Bank, May
Pen, Grace Bank, Double Run, Burrel Boom, Lord's Bank, and finally
following the Northern Hiway to the Haulover Bridge, where teams
will feel the "suck water" of the last leg as they enter the Burdon
Canal to make it to the finish line at the BelCan Bridge in Belize
City!
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys, girls, and
Canoe Fans, this is a race you cannot miss! With teams from all
over Belize this will be the most EXTREME event of the year. For
