Pre-requisites for all teams wishing to participate in the Belize Extreme Canoe Adventure Race are as follows:

At least one member of the team must have competed as a professional in the La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge or other equivalent race. This is not a race for beginners! See rules for more info.

All teams participate on the assumption that they are aware of the dangers associated with adventure racing.

Other non-stop races on the American Continent include the Ausable Canoe Marathon, a 120 mile race which starts in the late evening and finishes about 14 hours later, and the Texas Water Safari, a 260 mile 37 hour race. Like these non-stop races, the BECA Race will paddle through the night requiring teams to install satisfactory lighting on their canoes, proper safety equipment, and know the river well.

All teams on the water must be fully supported by their "Ground Crews". Teams not having a "Ground Crew" and chase vehicle will not be allowed to participate.

Items the ground crews must have are:
1.
Fully charged VHF Radio or Cell Phone (please note that cell coverage may be lacking in some areas; "bag phones" are better).
2. A complete first aid kit including Oral Rehydration Salts (contact Ruth at rxpharmgut@btl.net for contents reccommended for a first aid kit).
3. Lots of water (Crystal Water will be available; donated by Bowen & Bowen).
4. A spare flashlight (water proof type prefferable eg. Maglite) and spare batteries.
5. A spare paddle.

Items teams must have within their canoes are:
1. A readily available and servicable life vest for each member of the team.
2. Plenty of water (BCAnoe will not be responsible for servicing teams).
3. A flashlight (water proof type prefferable eg. Maglite) and spare batteries.
4. A blue glow stick on a string for each team member, attached to their person at all times, for emergency use (to be provided by BCAnoe).
5. An orange glow stick attached to the rear of each canoe to be used at night-fall(to be provided by BCAnoe).

It is reccommended that "Ground Crews" have a reliable "chase" vehicle with a full tank of petrol and spare tire with neccessary tools.
